Mission statement

What we believe:

We believe in the concept of an interdependent community and that volunteering is an essential part of a healthy community.
Within the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi we are committed to social justice and social participation through positive action for all.

What we want to do:

Actively promote volunteering as a basic human activity.
Actively encourage and assist individuals or groups within their community to participate in voluntary activities.
Be open to needs in the community and support and develop new initiatives.

What the volunteer centre will do:

Accept challenges and risks in support of its goals. Pursue a policy of safe practice.
Work co-operatively, and value and share the skills of others within the Centre and the community.
Initiate programmes in response to community issues.
Not support compulsory volunteering in any form. We believe that working for the benefit or having to volunteer to maintain ones benefit status erodes the philosophy of volunteering.

For VOLUNTEERS The Centre will:

Assist volunteers to have a greater voice and a greater choice in the community.
Respect and value the experiences, beliefs and cultures of all volunteers.
Respect the right of volunteers to choose to be part of the Centre.

For ORGANISATIONS The Centre will:

Work co-operatively with voluntary organisations by referring volunteers who make a positive contribution to the work of those organisations. Assist voluntary organisations to promote safe and ethical work practices.

And for THE COMMUNITY The Centre will:

Assist in the development of cohesive communities.Address issues of social concern.
