Volunteering Otago is a charitable trust that supports, promotes and upholds the integrity of volunteering. We offer a core "placement service" which matches volunteers with registered local organisations who have a wide range of roles for volunteers. The positions include mentoring, counselling, driving, administration, advising, befriending, collecting (one off nationwide collections), sporting plus much more.

We also provide training and support to community organisations to promote good practice in their volunteer dealings. This is offered in the form of our monthly support meetings, also the lunchtime seminars we offer.

If your organisation would like any specific training please contact us with details. For more information on these services and events, please e-mail us: dvct@ihug.co.nz

Our training service extends to Central Otago and Southland so for upcoming training in these areas refer to our up coming events page.

Volunteering for Mental Health Recovery

Volunteering Otago also offers a programme for people who experience mental illness and would like to do some voluntary work as part of their recovery.  The programme can assist people to find both voluntary work as well as receiving some support as they volunteer.

It works two ways:

1. By referral through a mental health worker (Community mental health team, Corstorphine Baptist Community Trust, PACT etc.)

2. By contacting the co-ordinator of the programme at the volunteer centre.

The co-ordinator, the potential volunteer and their mental health worker have an initial meeting to explore the possibilities.  At this time we usually agree to work together and share relevant information.

The co-ordinator provides extra support for the volunteer by:-

-  discussing what the person wants to do

-  accompany a person to a voluntary organisation for an initial interview

-  have ongoing contact with the volunteer while they are volunteering

-  occasionally volunteer with a person for a few sessions to get them started

-  have ongoing contact with the volunteer's mental health support person

Together we take a realistic look at voluntary work.  The result is usually a good experience for the volunteer and the voluntary organisation.
